Angoves Fortifieds - South Australia

The Angove family company, Angove's Pty. Ltd., is one of Australia's largest privately owned wine companies and stands as one of the few with strong interest in distilling as well as grape growing and winemaking.

The Bookmark range of fortified wines embodies Angove's philosophy of providing the consumer with the highest possible quality product at a most affordable price. Bookmark Port, Marsala and Sherries are all produced in the traditional way using discrete parcels of wood-aged material that are judiciously blended to provide a consistency of style, time after time.

Brands Laira - Coonawarra, South Australia

Brand's Laira is synonymous with words like heritage, excellence and history. To understand how this winery has established such a reputation, one must look to its past.

In 1893, a retired sea captain named Stentiford purchased a plot of land in Coonawarra. Naming it after his much-loved ship, Laira, Stentiford planted the land to Shiraz vines. Eric Brand, the first Patron of Coonawarra, became the custodian of the vineyard more than half a century later, continuing the tradition of creating exceptional quality wines.

The winery's landholdings have now grown to cover almost 300 hectares and fruit for Stentiford's Old Vines Shiraz is still sourced from the original vines planted by Captain Stentiford in 1893. With an impressive show awards history, Brand's Laira Coonawarra remains a steady and powerful beat in South Australia's heartland.

Brothers in Arms - Langhorne Creek, South Australia

Brothers In Arms, the essence of Langhorne Creek, evolved from five generations of grape growing tradition since 1891.Today, it is recognised as one of the most famous in South Australia. The Brothers in Arms label, released in 1998 is rich in old vine fruit, some as old as 117 years! For years one of the wine industry's best kept secrets, Langhorne Creek is now a strong premium wine producer in its own right. The 'blood' that flows through the veins here is red ~ Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

Cullen - Margaret River, Western Australia

The Cullen family philosophy is to put quality before quantity. Quality starts in the vineyard where the vines are dry farmed. Cullen Wines will search for the best quality expression of the vineyard in the wine. Cullen Estate Vineyard has "A" Grade Biodynamic Certification with the Biological Farmers Association.

The vineyard site at Cullens was carefully chosen for its potential to produce great wine, and in particular red wine. The maritime climate, rocky soils, dry farming, and biodynamic practices all help to create individual and diverse wine styles which are unique to Cullen.

Fire Gully - Margaret River, Western Australia

The property was named Fire Gully after two large bush fires in 1952 and 1970 that ravaged the gully which runs through the central block. The original farming activity on the plot was as a dairy and then as a beef farm. The first vines were planted in 1988 and the plantings extended in 1992 and 1997.

The Taoist symbols for “fire” and “valley” have been chosen for the label to represent the warmth, strength, fertility and abundance that this special site offers. The Fire Gully wines express the very essence of Margaret River regionality and quality and are recognised for consistent excellence with each passing vintage.

Moss Wood Semillon

Moss Wood is a premium wine producer located in the Margaret River Wine region of Western Australia. The area is regarded as one of Australia's premium grape growing regions. The wines produced at Moss Wood are Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Semillon and from Moss Wood's Ribbon Vale Vineyard, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Merlot and Merlot.

There is also a Cabernet Sauvignon produced from grapes sourced from Yallingup and Cowaramup. Owners Keith and Clare Mugford enjoy the challenge of consistently producing high quality wines at Moss Wood. All decisions made in the vineyard and winery are based on the effect they will have on the quality of the wine.

For over a quarter of a century Pierro fused these elements to produce superior wines of singular extraction, character and elegance. Their quest for heightened quality continues with each passing vintage.

We make wines that compliment a contemporary lifestyle and have an uncompromising attitude towards over-delivering quality whilst remaining relevant in a highly competitive market. Only great fruit can make great wine. No amount of trickery can force ordinary grapes to perform above themselves. A grower with commitment is as vital as a winemaker with knowledge and experience.

Initially we work on the selection of vineyard site, vine clone selection and vineyard architecture. Then we enhance the inherent grape quality at every step of the winemaking process. This care delivers true varietal flavor in every bottle of wine.

Our winemakers love the great fruit that exemplifies wines from the Murray Darling. Attention to detail and the unique winemaking practice that we encourage enhances these characters. Using our skill and state of the art technology we can retain natural grape aromas, flavours and freshness. The only catch is that these are hardly the rules for a standard code or a manual. They're values and instincts to be learned and developed and are treasured by certain people, our viticulturalists and winemakers.

A good winery and winemaking team are judged, not so much by their finest wine, but by their humblest: This is the wine that has to impress for its character, generosity and authenticity. It's these same qualities that then translate to value - and that's ultimately the consumer's judgement.

Australia's major winemakers draw fruit from the Murray-Darling because the resulting wines are just what the consumer wants; approachable, flavoursome and fruit driven with good balance. Most varieties excel here in North West Victoria and we are lucky because the famous four; Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot all perform exceedingly well.

Voyager Estate - Western Australia

Voyager Estate Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

When Michael Wright went in search of land to create Voyager Estate in 1991, his agricultural background and extensive knowledge of soils and climate enabled him to carefully select a site that would produce wines of character and excellence.

He recognised the potential of Stevens Valley and purchased a small vineyard, Freycinet, acquiring adjoining properties of similar soil types over time. What Michael identified were uniform gravelly soils - predominantly gravelly loam formed from the underlying granite and gnessic rock - with a stony clay base. These soils produce a slow release of moisture and nutrients to the vines.

Located in what James Halliday refers to as the ‘golden triangle’ of Margaret River (encompassing Voyager Estate, Leeuwin Estate and Cape Mentelle), the gravel soils, microclimate, aspect and consistent maritime influence of Stevens Valley are the foundations of our wine style.

Margaret River’s world-renowned beaches and surf, only five kilometres away from our vineyards, provide cooling maritime influences for our grapes and vines. Our site receives good winter rains with warm to hot summer conditions typical of a Mediterranean climate.

We take great care in surveying and selecting the right sites for each of our varieties. We meticulously map the soils on a 20 x 20 metre grid pattern before establishing any vineyard to ensure consistent soil structure and depth. We take a holistic approach to maintain a natural balance in our ecosystem. While only a portion of our site is under vine, the remaining areas are equally important to maintain nutrition and health, enabling us to capture and retain water and balance our vineyards with large tracts of vegetation.

By using ‘minimal input’ methods such as organically certified composts, organic soil conditioners and seaweed extracts, and avoiding synthetic fertilisers, we are able to nurture our soils and ensure that our vineyard blocks will continue to be the perfect home to our vines well into the future. Voyager Estate is certified by EntWine Australia, which recognises our sustainable practices throughout the vineyard and winery.

Our Estate range is our core focus. There are – deliberately - only six wines in our Estate range: Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Chenin Blanc and our Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot. We select only the varieties that consistently bring out the best in our site.

For each variety, we have found particular pockets in our vineyards that produce exceptionally pure fruit and as a result, our Estate range wines have become recognised as excellent expressions of their variety and wine style. There is no hero, nor poor cousin in our Estate range; there are simply six wines that play their part in demonstrating the effect that the gravel soils, microclimate, aspect, and maritime influence of our site have on these classic varieties.
